Certificate of Advanced Training in Psychotherapies

Overview of the Certificate

When you specialise in psychotherapies you will:

• gain clinical work experience in training posts
• complete a formal teaching program.

Entry requirements

In addition to the selection requirements for all certificates, you must have: 

• minimum 40 psychotherapy sessions towards the Psychotherapy Written Case. 
• a letter from your psychotherapy supervisor confirming the completion of the sessions. 

Duration, study and training load

It takes at least 2 calendar years to complete this certificate. You have up to 6 years to complete all of the requirements.  

During this time, you will complete:

• eight EPAs
• regular workplace-based assessments
• case summaries and supervised psychotherapy sessions
• study requirements based on your formal or self-directed learning in a core program and in your chosen treatment modality.

Clinical work experience

Trainees in Stage 3 must complete 24 months FTE in an approved training post. Fellows in training must be in a position that has been reviewed and approved by their Director of Advanced Training.

There are four modalities within the Certificate to choose from. You will complete case requirements from one of the following modalities only:

• individual dynamic psychotherapies 
• structured and brief psychotherapies 
• group psychotherapies 
• family and couples therapy. 

The rotation model of training does not apply to this Certificate of Advanced Training program. There are very few accredited psychotherapy posts and training in psychotherapies can be flexibly incorporated into a range of training and consultant work situations.

Formal education

Core program 

40 hours or equivalent learning in an accredited core program, or approved self-directed learning. 

You can request recognition of prior learning for an accredited psychotherapy core formal education course. The course must have been completed within 1 calendar year of entering the Certificate to be considered.

Modality program

120 hours or equivalent learning in an accredited program in your chosen modality.
